Obstacles to achieving reform - Joni Falk

Interesting list of barriers from last year - and it points out to me that the barriers are many and varied!

As a resource teacher who works on the teacher and classroom level, my experience deals mostly with the teacher collaboration aspect. For those schools where teachers can come together and rigorously talk about their teaching and their students' learning, effective science teaching has become a goal. Engaging in lesson study, collaboratively reflecting on and planning science lessons seem to be key for classroom instruction reform.

Even though the classroom is my focus, I do know that leadership at the site and district level is crucial - teachers are still needing support and encouragement, and the expectations that come from those in "leadership positions" can be either a positive or negative motivating factor.

Joan
