Carl Sagan warned us of this hazard just before his death. In his book "Science As A Candle in the Dark: The Demon-Haunted World", he warned of what would happen to our society if we did not sustain a strong science and technology education. He states that "as the candle flickers, and the darkness gathers, the demons begin to stir." The misdirected focus on language arts and reading (void of content) is creating a darkness, and the candle of science is flickering dimmer and dimmer. The focus on language arts for the sake of "reading in the content areas" is itself becoming "content-less". Science has now been marginalized to the point teachers are allowed to teach it only 10 minutes a week, or once a year during "science fair week". We need to sound the warning. The warning that our society is moving towards a greater and greater belief in psuedo science because the language arts and reading curriculum exposes children mostly to mythology, fictional stories, and wizardry because teachers are led to believe that this is what holds children's interest. What sign are you?
